RSD Data Center Post 1

Most people who know me know that I recently got to experience the joys of un-employment. In June that wonderful time ended for good. The Renton School District hired me to be their Systems Administrator. The previous person that had this job has left and i'm fortunate enough to be able to fill his shoes. I believe the correct term was "Server refresh" however in order to accomplish that a lot of other things needed to be done. If we are going to spend some good money on hardware then it only makes sense to have somewhere nice to put it. This post and the ones I plan to make following I intend to be a documentation of the data center i'm building.

There is a lot of work that goes into designing a data center. This will be a fun journey that will let me exercise my OCD side as well as my project management and multi tasking skills. The thing is it isn't that easy, I also have to support all of the servers and applications that ride on them. With a student population of 13,000 in addition to the staff to support everyone there is a lot of work to be done in addition to building a new environment.

Before I get into what we've done and what is still being planned on let's have a little history. There are about 100 servers in the district. Some are physical servers, about 60 are virtual. Most of the larger high schools that I support have file print servers to provide local access to data. We have an existing SAN with about 13Tb of raw storage. Our core network consists of a pair of Cisco 6509 switches and a pair of Cisco 4506 switches.

The existing server infrastructure is primarily dominated by the 3 HP blade chassis. Fully populated with BL20p G2, BL25p G2 blades. There exists a few ML370 G2, DL380 G2 and DL360 G2 servers. Anyone familiar with the HP product line can tell that we have some rather old hardware.

Our various schools and ancillary buildings have traditionally been connected to the core with T1 lines. Back in the day this was awesome, in the current age of YouTube and high bandwidth applications this just is not cutting it. The cost of laying our own fiber net and supporting it was much lower than the cost of leasing lines from others. The work to bring the rest of the schools on to our fiber net should be completed rather soon. There are only a few still on the T1 lines. Fortunately that project was underway well before I got there.

The current data center is in a room that is about 36' X 30'. Cooling for this room is done with a 10 ton HVAC unit that sits on the roof. Power for the room is handled through a 40 kW APC UPS backed up with a 100 kW diesel generator. Power and cooling in the data center is always a prime concern. The way we are getting power to the racks today is inadequate to support todays hardware. As far as cooling there currently is no separation between the cold and hot air in the room. That means our HVAC unit is running in a highly inefficient manner. Fortunately the district has a person dedicated to saving money by being green, opening up a whole world of possibilities.

In my future posts i'll talk about all of the various details surrounding the project.

  • Servers
  • Storage
  • Cabling
  • Power
  • Cooling
  • Cabinets

Not necessarily in that order.

I have also been taking photos of the data center as it is progressing. Here is the first set, as i'm sure you can see there's a lot to be done. Stay tuned for more to come.

Please add your comments and questions below. I want to know what interests you.

Social Networks and what you tell them

This online digital life has made me approach things quite differently. I've always been quite open, and I find it pretty easy to compartmentalize things that are going on. Knowing when to say things, where to say them. Things like that end up sitting in the back of my mind quietly providing input while i'm about to do something.

Social networking like Twitter and Facebook make these things even more important. Knowing the scope of the service changes the way you interact with it. I tend to look at items that I post and think "would I be OK with this being a headline on the nightly news?"

Often I catch myself and end up not saying things that might have a negative impact. That's actually what started this post. As i'm sure lots of you know i'm in the job market right now, looking for stable work. I got an update and almost said "Sweet X wants Y but I want Z" and then thought better of it. It's an interesting game we play.

The XCC

Joe, a good friend of mine decided back in November that we wanted to be MMA cage fighters. We started training, put on gloves, head gear, boxed each other, rolled around quite a bit. Sam white takes us under his wing, starts coaching us, pushing us, making us carry big rocks up a steep hill. All sorts of Mr Miyagi type stuff. Sam and Joe have their brown belt in judo and I have my black belt, we're feeling pretty good.

Our fight is scheduled for March 17th, Joe is entered in the 185 lb tournament. He's fighting Lyn Bentley (4-0), I'm fighting Kalani Cornwall (0-0). We're bad asses, we're going to wipe the floor with them.

The time draws near. 2 weeks before our fight Gary Drake comes to take a look at us, tells us that we're doing good. We are ready for this, months of preparation.

Planning on weighing in on Friday night, we've been starving ourselves to make weight. What? you want us to weigh in on Saturday? We talk them into letting us weigh on Friday. I personally get very little sleep that night. Wake up a few times, in the middle of my fight. Getting myself psyched up for this.

Saturday, drive down, check into the hotel. "What's the plan?" They aren't ready, running behind. "Go eat lunch." Free meal tickets, hey, this isn't so bad. We watch the weigh in, go for pictures, size up our competition. The rest of the day becomes a little bit of a blur. Sam and dan arrive, rules meeting at 5. Finally comes down to fight time.

The first 3 fights of the night go pretty quick, soon it's my turn. "Can I have the fighter from the red corner!" I walk onto the stage, spotlight, loud crowd. I make my way up to the ring. I have my corner following me, Joe, Sam, Dan. Oh crap, they lock me in with a 2X4. "Fighting out of Port Angeles..." I raise my arm, the crowd cheers. Kalani enters the ring, we face off. The ref runs the normal things, "You understand the rules? Fight clean." We go to our corners.

"FIGHT!"

We come together, touch gloves. He has a few inches on me. I've got this. I see a strike come, it misses, second(?) slides right off my cheek and into my nose, boy that vasolene is great stuff. My nose opens up like a fire hydrant. Conscious decision is no longer an option, instinct kicks in, get close, tie up, we do. I think I try a foot trip we're headed towards the ground. I like it down here. Fatal mistake? I wasn't ready for it, I wasn't controlled. He gets the mount, Punches rain down. I hear Joe out of the corner, "Calm down!" I'm back into the fight. I decide I don't like being on my back facing him, I roll to my stomach, curled in a ball. He cocks his right arm it's pointing straight towards the ceiling, down it comes into the side of my head. That happens a few times, I open up a little bit and a arm comes through, I fight the choke, it's set, I tap.

I stand up, it's all so new to me. Where is my line? (Judo) Why didn't the ref say "mate"? (Judo) why do I have this towel on my face? Why is he hugging me?

I make my way to the back, my buddies are there for me. It's nice having good friends. I get out of my gloves. My chest is red, "Do you want to go to the bathroom and wash up a little?" I think I'm going to hop in the shower really quick. I watch the water go into the drain, it's pink for the longest time. My face stings, the towel I dry off with turns pink. I look at myself in the mirror, I'm beat to shit. Change clothes, I head back, Joe still has to fight.

Sunday Mornings

My plan to get up at 7AM and go work out fell through. Not exactly to my disappointment but it would have been good to get the cardio in.
